1. Data Controller

The Data Controller is Wattle, reachable at hello@wattle.page.

Wattle does not collect or otherwise process personal data during the normal operation of the application, except where the User voluntarily contacts the Controller for support.

2. Nature of the service

Wattle is a desktop personal journal application, designed to run locally on the User's device.

The data entered into the application - journal pages, documents, attachments and any other content created by the User - is saved locally on the User's device. The application offers neither cloud storage nor centralised storage of the journal.

Wattle does not automatically transmit to the Controller or to third parties the content saved locally, nor the User's personal data, during the normal operation of the application.

3. Data processed

During the normal operation of the application, Wattle does not collect the User's personal data and does not transmit the locally saved content to the Controller.

The application may process locally, on the User's device:

  • the personal data entered manually by the User;
  • the journal pages and the other content created by the User;
  • the documents and attachments imported voluntarily by the User;
  • the technical data strictly necessary for the local operation of the application.

This data remains saved locally on the User's device and is not collected by Wattle during the normal operation of the application.

If the User voluntarily contacts the Controller through the support address hello@wattle.page, Wattle may process the information contained in that communication, including:

  • the User's email address and the other contact details provided;
  • the content of the support request;
  • the attachments provided voluntarily by the User;
  • the technical information provided voluntarily by the User in order to diagnose or resolve the reported problem.

4. Purposes and legal basis of the processing

Personal data received through the support email address is processed exclusively in order to:

  • reply to the User's support request;
  • understand and handle the reported problem;
  • diagnose and resolve technical problems;
  • provide technical and product support;
  • examine the error reports and other reports sent voluntarily by the User.

The legal basis for the processing is the Controller's legitimate interest in providing support, in maintaining the operation and reliability of the software and in replying to communications initiated by the User.

Support communications are not used for marketing, advertising or profiling purposes. Wattle does not use personal data received through support to train, optimise or improve artificial intelligence models operated by third parties.

5. Local storage and access to device resources

The application is designed to save locally, on the User's device, the content they create. Wattle may create, rename and delete folders exclusively within the Documents/Wattle/ directory. The application may also import existing files explicitly selected by the User, copy them into the Documents/Wattle/ directory and delete the files contained in that specific directory.

Wattle has neither access to nor general control over the other folders or the other files on the device, except where it is the User who voluntarily initiates access by selecting a file through the operating system's file picker. The files and content opened in this way remain saved locally on the User's device and are not transmitted to the Controller during the normal operation of the application.

6. Local artificial intelligence

The artificial intelligence features are optional and work through an engine that runs locally on the User's device.

Wattle does not transmit this data to external databases or to cloud artificial intelligence services, and does not use it to train, optimise or improve third-party models or algorithms.

Communication between the application and the local artificial intelligence engine takes place through a local loopback interface, for example 127.0.0.1. This is communication between processes running on the User's device and does not require data to be sent over the internet.

7. Content generated by artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence systems can produce inaccurate, incomplete or incorrect results. Results generated by AI should therefore be read back and verified by the User before being used for any purpose that requires accuracy. Wattle does not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, reliability or suitability of results generated by artificial intelligence.

8. Third-party services and purchases

Wattle does not use third-party cloud services to store the journal pages, documents, attachments or other content created locally by the User. Purchase of the application and the related payments are handled through the Microsoft Store. The payment, billing, account and transaction data processed in connection with purchases made on the Microsoft Store is handled by Microsoft in accordance with its own terms, its own privacy notices and its own data protection practices. Wattle neither collects nor independently processes the payment card data communicated to Microsoft.

Microsoft's processing of that information is governed by Microsoft's applicable notices and terms.

9. Website and usage statistics

The Wattle website uses Umami Analytics solely to collect aggregated statistics about the use of the site, such as the number of visits and page views, the pages visited, where visits come from and technical information about the device and browser used.

Umami is configured to carry out this statistical analysis without using profiling cookies and without creating personal profiles of users.

The data collected through the analytics tool is used solely to understand how the site is used, to monitor its operation and to improve its content and services.

Wattle does not use the data collected through analytics for behavioural advertising, profiling or tracking the User across other websites.

10. Contact form and support

The website may allow the User to contact Wattle through a contact or support form. When the User sends a request, Wattle may process the data voluntarily provided by the User, such as:

  • the name or other identifier provided;
  • the email address;
  • the content of the request;
  • any attachments;
  • any technical information provided by the User to allow problems to be diagnosed and resolved.

The data is processed solely to respond to the request, provide support, handle reports and resolve any problems relating to the product.

Data sent through the contact form is kept for as long as is reasonably necessary to handle and resolve the request and, in any case, in accordance with what is stated in this policy for support communications.

11. Security

The Controller adopts technical and organisational measures that are reasonable and appropriate to the nature of the personal data processed through support communications. Because Wattle is designed to run locally, the security of the data saved on the device also depends on the measures adopted by the User, who is responsible for maintaining appropriate security measures on their own device: operating system security, account protection, access controls and regular backups.

Wattle cannot guarantee the security of data saved locally where the User's device, operating system, account or other local security mechanisms have been compromised.
